Biography

Yulin graduated from Interior Architecture at Xinjiang Arts University in 2019 and studied architecture at RIBA PART2 at The University of Kent from 2020 to 2022. Yulin once worked as an intern in Vanke Group, one of the top three real estate groups in China, and worked in design management, where he participated in the planning, investment, design and renovation of several commercial projects in mainland China. Yulin likes to receive new knowledge and is willing to keep trying, so he has research on biological architecture and parametric design. In The CHATHAM INTRA project, he extracted the characteristics of slime molds from the growth logic of slime molds and transformed them into architectural design methods. In the future, Yulin will return to mainland China and continue to work in commercial real estate and other projects. At the same time, he will also expand his interest in parametric biological architecture and continue to conduct research and self-study and take it as his own hobby.

Slime Mold Transportation Hub Architecture Studies

Synopsis

In our first unit, we focused on the area inside Chatham.  So basically, Chatham intra is an intermediate area, a transition area, which connects the intermediate area between Rochester center and Chatham Center.  In the past few centuries, the port industry in Chatham has been growing and creating a glorious period in the region.  However, since the beginning of the last century, the closure of large ports, the transfer of industry and the demolition of the old Rochester railway station have led to the decline of Chatham intra.

In 5a, I started from the direction of urban design and tried to solve some urban problems in Chatham.  Therefore, I take regional accessibility as the core of the design, focusing on improving the overall traffic performance of the city and enhancing the connectivity of the community.  Increase the walking area of the whole community.

In phase 5b, I will focus my research on planning and designing a new urban transportation network.  And it is planned to design a cutting-edge transportation hub station.  The design concept comes from the road simulation and optimization of slime mold.  The colony generation logic can quickly find the shortest path through the given direction point and path, and achieve some optimal path algorithms similar to urban rail transit through its own reproduction ability.  Therefore, according to this logic, I put the Chatham intra area in the simulation, and let the Growth Logic of slime molds grow wantonly in the Chatham area.  Finally, the optimal construction of the new urban path of the whole Chatham intra is simulated.

Therefore, I rearranged the starting point and starting point of slim mold in my site, and assumed a certain crowd density to conduct the simulated route design.  Because my building has been built as a transportation hub, the overall pedestrian flow line and building space should also be planned and generated with the best, fastest and shortest path.  Finally, the growth trajectory of slim mold is combined with the given pedestrian density to finally generate the building block.

The potential of my project may be more inclined to the development direction of Chatham in the next 10 or even 20 years.  Because the essence of Chatham is the same as that of many urbanization processes.  There are more and more houses and apartments, but the population density and building density have not been reasonably solved.  In fact, the traffic performance of the city and the walking accessibility of the community still exist.  So I also hope that this scheme can bring more possibilities and thinking to Chatham intra.

The purpose of the building was to design a transport hub complex to deal with the urban problems of CHATHAM INTRA for the next 20-30 years.  Slime Mold inspired the scheme as the building block.  Make full use of biological diversity and real architectural space for bold innovation and design.  At the same time, I hope to explore more possibilities for future architecture by studying natural colonies.
